It was inevitable the backup wines would be opened. As the night rolled on, the food continued to flow from the kitchen and the conversation became more jovial, we were drunk, well I certainly was at least, more wine was always going to be produced.
Lafont has a special place here in Malaysia. My local friends love Bordeaux. Burgundy is popular, as are the Italian varieties, but Bordeaux is definitely the wine of preference. LaFont is Bordeaux, but its popularity has another source. A large part of Lafont’s fame is the local connection. The owners of the Château are Malaysian, and the son, Nico, is an active member of the wine community and a great guy. Everyone is drinking his wine, I grabbed a mini vertical when I made the connection and met Nico. He is an outstanding ambassador for his family and the LaFont label.
This is only half the story. Having now tried the wine, it stands on its own merit. Lafont represents an excellent expression of Bordeaux and outstanding value. This wine is not just about the local connection, it is simply a great wine and we are lucky to have access to both the product and Nico.
As you can imagine, now into our fourth bottle, my notes and memory are starting to become less than ideal for commenting. I will review the Lafont’s in more detail down the track.
Thank you to Kevin and Jenny for opening not one, but two bottles of this impressive wine.
These notes are not great, the night was late, and I was inebriated.
Served from a decanter, but I am not sure how long it was decanted.
Shell tells me the colour of wines. I am colour blind. Not black and white, but reds and greens of different shades. The nose was dominated by blackberries and green capsicum. Ten minutes later the nose had opened up considerably. Blackberries still dominated, but the green capsicum was a pleasant herbaceousness in the background along with sweet spices. The palate was medium, well balanced and had a lovely length.
I will give this wine the time it deserves and more comprehensive notes when I am sober. Suffice to say it was consumed on the back of the RunRig and I thoroughly enjoyed it. So much so, we opened a second bottle and finished it in a very quick time!
