Aglianico revisited.
After KC and his Anglianico two weeks ago I have been chasing the variety. I can only recall trying it twice before. Looking back through my notes, I found this bottle we had on our driving trip from Kuala Lumpur to Luang Parbang.
We love Chiang Mai. After hitting Luang Parbang we drove back into Thailand via Chiang Rai for a few days, but our destination was always Chiang Mai before the return trip.
Whenever we are in Chiang Mai we always visit David’s. I make no claim to be an authority on Thai restaurants, but David’s has been awarded the best in Thailand for a few years running, and I won’t argue, the place is special.
It is one of those places where the front of the house is as polished as the kitchen. David is a natural on the floor. has an incredible memory for faces and detail, even if he keeps notes, on our third visit he recalled details about us that made us feel like regulars.
The food rivals his service and the wine list is comprehensive, well priced and eclectic.
These notes were hastily put together post-dinner with plenty of input from Shell.
100% Aglianico del Vulture.
Decanted for half an hour.
Deep purple in the glass. Blackberries dominate the nose, but there is plenty going on. Prunes and pretty violets with cocoa all sit nicely in the background. It is youthful and powerful. On the palate, medium-plus acidity and medium-plus tannins. It is a big wine, but not unbalanced. Plenty of blackberry fruit and a textured chocolate finish. Not in my style but impressive nonetheless.
Looking back at these notes, I am surprised I have not tried to track more of these down.
