We shared a glass of this blend with our lobster bisque at 2oX.
Chenin Blanc, with Semillon and Riesling is my favourite white grape variety. I consider the Marc Brédif Vouvray one of the great wines of the world.
The Domaine du Tariquet is a blend, 75% Chenin with 25% Chardonnay.
Which brings us to Chardonnay. If there is a more polarising wine I have not encountered it. At its best, Grand Cru Chablis, Montrachet and the occasional cool climate new world example, it is absolutely stunning. Then there is the rest. Flabby, over oaked and utterly terrible.
Served cold, this wine was more Chenin than Chardonnay. The nose had soft citrus, mandarin and some minerality. There was some hints of apricot coming through as well. On the palate, good lean acidity and more of that mineral, almost salty finish. Enjoyable without being great.
What a difference a few minutes and a few degree in the glass make. The Chardonnay has crawled out of bed in a stupor demanding attention. The acid is gone, replaced by flabby alcohol, old apricots and almonds.
What a shame.
Chardonnay, I love to hate you.
Bisque was great.
