Sauvignon Blanc is not a variety I seek out. It was popular in Australia due to the reputation New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc carried. It exploded in the 90’s with claims New Zealand produced the best examples in the world. This may be true, I had nothing to compare it to at the time. Trade agreements between Australia and New Zealand meant high quality Sauvignon Blanc was on every shelf at a reasonable price.
Everyone was drinking it. I could see the attraction. As Sauvignon Blanc’s popularity soared, Australian Riesling and Semillon stock plummeted. While Australian’s guzzled litres of the stuff, I enjoyed Riesling and Semillon at ridiculously low pricing.
I missed the Sauvignon Blanc Bandwagon completely.
We purchased a glass of this wine to have with the ratatouille at 2oX.
Soft passionfruit and those distinct Sauvignon Blanc green leaf characteristics on the nose. A gentle palate, more passionfruit and sweet lemon. A little acidity to hold it together. A simple wine that is not remarkable in any way. Pleasant without being impressive.
