Melbourne Burgundy Social Club Gevrey-Chambertin Tasting, June 2015.
Part 2.
Every Tuesday I am going to take a look back at one of the wines from the MBSC Gevrey-Chambertin tasting night.
I apologise for the poor quality images, it was late and I was inebriated.
A recent post in the Malaysian wine Club reminded me of just how much I love the Lucien Le Moine range. Along with Bruno Clair, Lucien’s wines are consistently excellent, from Bourgogne through to Gran Cru.
On this night, of the nine at the MBSC, Lucien was rated wine of the night by three members. Amongst a range of highly rated wines from Gevrey, it was in everyone’s top three. From a well-respected vineyard, and a quality vintage, the stars were aligned for this to be a great wine.
Pale ruby in the glass. Dark cherries dominate the nose. There is a lot going on here, the nose is concentrated, perfumed, powerful, yet elegant. Supporting the cherries is licorice, violets, and lavender. There is a subtle forest floor, yet the aromas are mostly pretty rather than rustic. The wine is intoxicating, it seems almost a waste to drink it. Certainly, a wine to savor in the glass. The palate offers medium-plus acidity, medium-plus body, and lovely, lingering tannins to support the structure. It is textured and delicious. Cherries, chocolate and licorice with a stunning minerality. A superb wine that offers power, elegance, and complexity on both the nose and the palate.
