“You may have the universe if I may have Italy”
Giuseppe Verdi
We arrive in Treiste and walk a few hundred meters to our accommodation. Accessed through the worlds smallest elevator, it is clean and tidy with tremendous views over the city. Across the road is a stunning church.
There are Christmas markets to explore and I am starving having missed lunch. Now we are in Italy I am not holding out much hope for ćevapi, but I am sure I can source some wine and decent pasta.
We stroll around the city. I had no idea how beautiful Trieste would be. It is warmer here than Ljubljana. The markets don’t offer much food so we look for a place for dinner. Shell decides on a place a short walk away. A few minutes later we find ourselves in a very cool wine bar, Enoteca Nanut Trieste.
There are dozens of bottles open by the glass. Despite some initial confusion that the restaurant closes at 19:00, the confusion is that it actually opens at 19:00, we start ordering wine by the glass. The man behind the bar is the owner and a procession of local wines arrive throughout the night. I lost track of how many.
For dinner we order the scallops and the rabbit xxx which are both delicious. This followed by spaghetti frutti di mare ragú and the seafood bisque. The highlight is sucking the prawn heads clean.
We walk home feeling content. The sheets are not Italian linen, but certainly linen in Italy.
