We skip breakfast and walk to Trastevere. We would walk through this suburb on the way to hospital when Shell needed surgery. It became an almost daily walk at one point. Trastevere is quiter than the area surrounding the Vatican. It is a little dirtier, a little darker. It is a place that was once poor, but is now expensive, but it has held on to its past. Plenty of restaurants, cafes and bars. Our walk to the hospital always included an Aperol spritz at Bar Picchiotto.
“I had noticed that both in the very poor and very rich extremes of society the mad were often allowed to mingle freely.”
Charles Bukowski
We follow the Tiber River back to Scialla The Original Street Food. Yesterday we missed out on the cacio e pepe and we wanted to beat the rush. An early lunch of cacio e pepe and spaghetti bolognese before we head to the art gallery.
We walk to the Galleria Nazionale d’Arte Moderna e Contemporanea. It was a highlight of our last trip. It is an incredible gallery, Burri, Van Gough, Monet, Sironi, Morandi, Boccioni, the list goes on forever. The current feature exhibition is a tribute to J.R.R. Tolkien. The main purpose for our visit is for Shell to see her favourite piece, Dreams by Vittorio Crocos. Unfortunately, the piece is no longer on display and is in storage. Same with the Warhol.
Walking home we are both feeling pretty tired. We clocked up over 15km yesterday, similar today. It is time to put our feet up. Shell gives me some tasks to undertake while sh has an afternoon nap-
- A bottle of wine for our hosts.
- Desert from the desert place up the road.
- Biscotto for Shell
I forget the biscotto.
Desert for dinner. To compensate the poor nutrition, I am skipping wine tonight.
It is all about balance.
A train to Naples tomorrow.
This is our last day in Rome.
