The cold is having one last attempt to pull me down.
We head to Wine Bar De’ Penitenzieri for a coffee and breakfast. We saw some panini and focaccia two days ago that would make a perfect breakfast. we are too early, the delivery does not arrive for another hour. We oder some coffee and head to Mordi Sandwichouse.
We walk to Rome Termini, the FR9515 departs Rom to Naples at 11.00am. We figure out ritardo means delayed. We grab a seat in a cafe and watch the delay climbs from 10 minutes, to 15 all the way up to 45. I grab another coffee and a sandwich.
“There is no avoidance in delay.”
Aeschylus
The FR9515 arrives and we are sharing a booth with Americans. They have this strange habit of talking their way through what they are doing.
‘I am just going to take my headphones out’
‘This is number seven, our seats are number seven’
I can’t work out who they are talking too and it doesn’t seem to be questions they are asking, so there is no answer to offer.
It am looking forward to the trip, you can’t read a book when you are driving.
You get to Napoli in an hour when the train travels at 300km/h.
“It’s not that we have to quit
Roman Payne
this life one day, but it’s how
many things we have to quit
all at once: music, laughter,
the physics of falling leaves,
automobiles, holding hands,
the scent of rain, the concept
of subway trains… if only one
could leave this life slowly!”
We only have half a day in Napoli, but my first impressions are that this place is gritty and rough. I don’t hate it, but it is not my favourite place. Maybe I am not seeing the best parts. People have raved about this city.
We check in and head out for a late lunch. Our first choice, Osteria fa Chiccio e Mery is full so we head to Stritt Stritt. Our plan was to try pizza, we are in Naples after all. Stritt Stritt is a seafood restaurant, so no pizza. We order a bottle of Fiano, antipasti di stagione per due, insalata di polpo, acciughe fritte and garafolo con baccalà, capperi e pomodoro. Tiramisu for dolci.
A fantastic meal for our last day in Italy.
We head home and but a bottle of red to drink while we sit on the balcony.
Naples is not pretty, but it does have character.
Dubai tomorrow.
