When we first arrived in Malaysia in December 2016, we struggled to find a decent wine retailer. There were a few places selling average bottles stored in high temperatures, we were not even tempted.
Not that it mattered, Malaysia is Tiger territory. The food, the weather, everything about this place is cold beer. For the most part, Tiger is all you will get.
I can admit to being a beer snob, I love a well made craft beer. But Tiger became a standard. Ice cold, ice in the glass, I drank bottle after bottle. I consumed oceans of Tiger.
We started cooking more at home, Shell decided we needed to find a decent wine retailer. I had to agree, I was starting to miss wine.
Eventually we discovered two retailers in Bangsar, both in a larger grocery franchise. Village Grocer has a small, but solid range of New and Old World wines.
The pick of the retailers is at Jason’s. If you can catch him on site, the proprietor, Sebastian, an Italian expat who was either a boxer or rugby player in his youth, is outstanding at steering your wine selection. Further, the range is very good, though a little expensive, but the wines are stored in a climate controlled cellar. A necessity in this climate.
This was our first wine purchase in Kuala Lumpur, recommended by Sebastian from the very good wine outlet in Jason’s.
I am guessing this was around February, 2017.
I kept notes, but I cannot recall where I put them.
If memory serves me, they were all good drinking.
